Most people believe that influence – the ability to change people’s thoughts, hearts, or minds – comes from status.

They believe that significance – the power to be recognized or respected by others – comes from what they have, their titles, their degrees, being known by the right people, or the power they’ve acquired.

Those things simply are not true.

I once walked into a room of 500 people – most of whom had more status, titles, degrees, money, and power than I’d ever dreamt of having and none of whom knew who I was or what I could do for them.

There were even international celebrities in that room.

Over the course of four days, leveraging nothing more than my talents and gifts, I sought to serve each of them without expecting anything in return.

By the time I left, they not only knew my name, but they were also actively seeking me out. They wanted to hear my perspective on things and wanted my advice – and they were listening to and acting on it!

The celebrity invited me onto his show because he wanted to share with his listeners to benefit from the amazing things he’d heard from me.

The truth is that people don’t care how much money someone else has or how nicely they dress or how powerful they are – what they care about are the results they believe the other person can deliver for them.

If they believe that the message being offered to them will change their lives, they won’t care about anything else.

There are just two questions that someone who wishes to influence others must be able to answer:

1. What can they deliver that will change or save lives?
2. What can they do that will make a difference in the world around them?
